Universities, R&D Groups and Academic Networks

IC3K is a unique forum for universities, research groups and research projects to present their research and scientific results, be it by presenting a paper, hosting a tutorial or instructional course or demonstrating its research products in demo sessions, by contributing towards panels and discussions in the event's field of interest or by presenting their project, be it by setting up an exhibition booth, by being profiled in the event's web presence or printed materials or by suggesting keynote speakers or specific thematic sessions.

Special conditions are also available for Research Projects which wish to hold meetings at INSTICC events.

Universidade da Madeira

The University of Madeira is a Portuguese public university, created in 1988 in Funchal. The university offers first and second cycle academic degrees in a wide range of fields, in accordance with the Bologna process. It is now under the CMU/Portugal agreement with Carnegie Mellon University, having master programme in Computer Engineering, Human Computer Interaction and Entertainment Technology. Students admitted will be eligible for scholarships and have internship opportunity during the summer break. In addition, Madeira Interactive Technologies Institute is devoted to building an international partnership with other educational institutes and industry.


Madeira Interactive Technologies Institute

The Madeira Interactive Technologies Institute (Madeira-ITI) is a not-for-profit innovation of the University of Madeira, founded by the University of MadeiraMadeira Tecnopolo, and Carnegie Mellon University. The institute was created in December 2009 in order to provide a home for the numerous collaborations between these partners, in both research and education.

The work of the institute concentrates primarily on innovation in the areas of computer science, human-computer interaction, and entertainment technology.

Since 2011, M-ITI has been part of the Laboratory of Robotics and Systems in Engineering and Science (LARSyS), an association of six R&D units representing four universities in Portugal: Instituto Superior TécnicoUniversidade de LisboaUniversidade dos Açores and Universidade da Madeira.

FIRST - virtual Factories: Interoperation suppoRting buSiness innovaTion

The manufacturing industry is entering a new era in which new ICT technologies and collaboration applications are integrated with traditional manufacturing practices and processes, which brings virtual organisations to factories, i.e. Manufacturing 2.0. Virtual factory to future manufacturing slows the flexible amalgamation of manufacturing resources in multiple organisations to create timely, demand driven product lines.
The project “vF Interoperation suppoRting buSiness innovaTion” (FIRST) provides the new technology and methodology to describe manufacturing assets; to compose and integrate the existing services into collaborative virtual manufacturing processes; and to deal with evolution of changes. From the overarching objective to enhance manufacturing integration through the application of advanced IT solutions, the innovative project brings together an experienced researcher with expertise in the designing an interoperability framework for facilitating interoperability on data/information, services and process levels respectively. These outcomes lead to significant business innovations for virtual factories, made possible by an internationally recognised group expertise in (manufacturing) services/
assets description languages, semantic services discover methods, and automated interoperability. The experienced researcher has an existing background in service oriented business process management; ontology based process model registration and management; and web service discovery and selection. She combines this with a perspective on application of those technologies. The FIRST project will take advantage of this complementary experience as well as the academic and industrial relationships in Europe and China respectively, taking advantage of the unique opportunity to address the concept from both perspectives.


Collaborative Learning Agents for Swarm Intelligence

The project is to explore a theoretical frame called “System Self-Awareness,” which is a data-driven concept to discover the uniqueness and innovative capability of a system, modeled and measured using a recursive distributed infrastructure named Collaborative Learning Agents (CLA) and a deep learning method named Lexical Link Analysis (LLA). The combination of CLA and LLA allows deep reinforcement learning and swarm intelligence to be extended and enhanced in a completely new perspective. The focus is to apply CLA and LLA for a system of self-learning autonomous swarm agents to learn intelligent actions and controls from environments, in an effort to improve their situation awareness, detect high-value targets and threats. Self-learning concepts will be integrated into other activities of the unmanned/autonomous swarm agents, create learning, adaptation and asymmetric advantages for many commercial and military applications.
